Mid-Century Modern Sideboard
Built from hard maple with contrasting solid walnut details, this handcrafted sideboard combines practical storage with clean Mid-Century Modern design. The angled legs give it unmistakable Danish-modern character, while the simple slab fronts and understated wooden pulls keep the overall appearance warm, balanced, and uncluttered.
Project Design and Layout
The sideboard was designed with a balanced, asymmetrical layout: a full-height cabinet on the left and three generously sized drawers on the right. Early SketchUp drawings helped establish the cabinet’s proportions, storage configuration, hardware placement, and distinctive angled base before construction began.
The elevated base and tapered legs give the cabinet a lighter appearance while adding the classic Mid-Century Modern silhouette that inspired the design.
Milling the Materials
Solid hard maple was selected for the cabinet because of its strength, smooth grain, and naturally light appearance. Each component was measured, cut, and prepared for assembly, with careful attention given to maintaining clean lines and consistent spacing across the door and drawer fronts.
Walnut was chosen for the handcrafted pulls, adding a rich natural contrast to the lighter maple without interrupting the simplicity of the design.
The Completed Sideboard
Once assembled, the simple slab fronts, carefully fitted door and drawers, and sculpted walnut pulls came together as one cohesive piece. A clear protective finish enhanced the maple’s natural warmth and grain while preserving the light appearance envisioned in the design.
Three spacious drawers and a concealed cabinet provide practical storage, while the elevated angled base keeps the piece from feeling visually heavy. The completed sideboard is functional enough for everyday use while retaining the distinctive character of handcrafted furniture.
